Marco Antonio Zago won the Science and Medicine category in recognition of his many contributions to science, with Paola Minoprio, from the Institut Pasteur de São Paulo, in the evaluation committee.
Paola Minoprio, executive director of the Institut Pasteur de São Paulo (IPSP), was on the evaluation committee of the Conrado Wessel Foundation (FCW) 2024 Award in Science and Medicine, which was awarded to Marco Antonio Zago, president of the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). The names of the winners were announced on August 20. Zago was selected for his exceptional contributions to science and medicine in Brazil, standing out as one of the most influential figures in the country’s academic and scientific scene.
Helena Nader, Professor Emeritus at the Federal University of São Paulo Medical School (EPM-UNIFESP) and president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) was the chair of the Science Award evaluation committee, comprised of nine renowned scientists.
Marco Antonio Zago has had an extensive and remarkable career. A graduate at the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine (FMRP-USP), where he also obtained his master’s and doctorate degrees, Zago completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Oxford. His career includes positions of great importance, such as rector of USP (2014-2017), pro-rector of Research at USP (2010-2014) and president of CNPq (2007-2010). During his tenure at CNPq, he was responsible for creating the National Institutes of Science and Technology Program. Zago also served as Secretary of State of Health for São Paulo and coordinator of the Cell Therapy Center (CTC) between 2001 and 2015, among others. In addition, he has published over 300 scientific papers referenced in the Web of Science.
In June 2024, Marco Antonio Zago was awarded the Chevalier of the National Order of the Legion of Honor by Emmanuel Macron, President of France. The honor recognized his efforts in creating the Institut Pasteur in São Paulo and establishing a joint law degree involving USP and the University of Lyon 3, as well as his fundamental role in strengthening relations between the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), FAPESP, and USP.
The FCW Award, organized by the Conrado Wessel Foundation, is one of the most prestigious scientific and cultural awards in Brazil. This edition announced two laureates: Marco Antonio Zago, in the Science and Medicine category, and filmmaker Ugo Giorgetti, in the Culture category. Created to recognize and honor important figures who contribute to the advancement of science, culture and photography in the country, the award’s essential objective is to promote innovation and excellence in various areas of knowledge. The 2024 awards ceremony will take place in October.
